The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. “Starting next week, military personnel, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to block the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the administration to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the administration to conduct terminations, referencing official advice that acknowledged any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the same day that government employees received only a incomplete payment for the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations expired at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”
