French authorities will start stopping small boats in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, following months of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader urging him to back the initiative and saying there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police representative says personnel will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Notably, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived change towards a more aggressive strategy this summer, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister left office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French officials will again be permitted to intercept boats before they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's not clear how the vessels will be stopped.
Strong winds are currently delaying the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking ways to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
